BS 5534 is the British Standard for slating and tiling. It covers how tiles and slates should be fixed (mechanically clipped or nailed rather than just bedded), what overlap or headlap is required, what batten spacing and grade is acceptable, and how the roof should handle wind uplift. The standard was significantly tightened in 2014, since which a lot of older UK roofs no longer comply — particularly for wind uplift. For a new roof or full re-roof, fitting to current BS 5534 is what insurers, surveyors and Building Control now expect. All our slating and tiling work is carried out to this standard.

For slate, aged Welsh slate in particular is in regular circulation through salvage and we can usually find what's needed. We'll always tell you straight at the survey whether a sympathetic match is realistic; for some heavily weathered or rare tile patterns the honest answer is that a small repair will be visible until the new tiles weather in.
