GRP fibreglass is excellent where you want a seamless, fully-bonded finish, a walk-on surface, or a coloured finish to match adjoining materials — slightly shorter life than EPDM, slightly higher install cost. Felt is the right call for smaller, secondary roofs where budget is the main driver — sheds, garage roofs, outbuildings — and a 15-year horizon is acceptable. Cost depends on four things: the roof area in square metres, the system you choose, whether the existing deck and insulation can be reused, and access. A small garage felt re-cover is a very different job from a heated extension that needs warm-deck insulation and Building Regs sign-off. Possibly — it depends how long it stays. Current UK guidance is that a flat roof should drain within around 48 hours of rainfall ending. Standing water beyond that ("ponding") is the single most common cause of premature flat roof failure: the weight stresses joints, UV degrades the membrane unevenly, and any small imperfection in the surface eventually becomes a leak. The fix is rarely just a new membrane — usually the deck falls need adjusting at the same time. If you've got persistent ponding, it's worth booking a survey before the next winter, not after it.

Both are excellent modern systems. EPDM is a single rubber membrane laid as one piece over most domestic roofs — flexible, very long-lived (30+ years), forgiving of slight movement in the building, and quick to install. GRP is applied wet and cures to a hard, fully-bonded fibreglass laminate — exceptionally tough underfoot, ideal where the roof is walked on, can be coloured to match other materials, and gives a sharper visual finish. EPDM tends to be slightly cheaper and slightly longer-lived; GRP tends to be tougher and better-looking. For a typical extension or garage, EPDM is our default recommendation; for a balcony or terrace, GRP often wins.
